Surviving your Big Fat South Asian Wedding Day
1. Delegate and walk away: Delegate jobs to family and friends, before your wedding and on the wedding day. Remember they are there to help and support you, trust them to handle the tasks you have assigned. If you don’t, you could be spending your wedding day dealing with hiccups all day long.
2. Drink Lots of Water: Put someone in charge of having water on them at all times for you. Your wedding day is going to fly by and you need to keep hydrated to make it through the day and keep that glowing look in your photos. If you are having a Hindu ceremony you might go for 3-4 hours without water.
3. Comfy Shoes: Your shoes may look spectacular, but that doesn’t
mean they’re going to feel comfortable. Unfortunately pretty shoes tend to come at a price – a painful one. So, bring a second pair for you to change into, trust us you will be gliding out of the reception with this helpful tip. It’s unlikely that anyone will be able to see them beneath your lehenga and this way you can dance away to your heart’s content.
4. Wedding Timeline: It’s great that you have a wedding timeline, but it is just as important to share it with your immediate family, bridal party, wedding vendors and people that you have delegated tasks to. While you are wrapped up your trusted friends and family can help ensure everything goes smoothly.
5. Don’t forget to eat: The last thing you want is to be feeling light-headed as you walk down the aisle (or tummy rumbling making an appearance mid-way through the ceremony), so make sure you have a nice and healthy breakfast and enjoy the dinner you’ve arranged on the day. Packing a few light nibbles, for ‘just-in-case’ is handy too. Make sure you add your eating times in your wedding day timeline. Pre-arrange for your caterer to deliver food to your suite.
6. Driver: Have a person responsible for driving you around. You are perfectly capable of driving, but you might be a little distracted. Have a friend or family member to drive you to and from salon appointments (or anywhere you need to go) on the day-of and if you can a few days before.
7. Have a Signature Cocktail, but not too much. Having a signature drink that reflects you and your husband to be is a great personal touch for your wedding guests to enjoy. Remember that you won’t need so much that day, you will want to enjoy all of it. Here are some South Asian inspired cocktails.
8. Create a photolist: Create a list of all the photos you want for your wedding day, and then delegate someone to making sure you capture those shots. Spend time discussing your photos with your photographer and allocate time for them. After your wedding day you want to look back and make sure you were 110% happy with your photos.
9. Prepare for the unexpected: With an Indian wedding and it’s thousand parts, a few things will go wrong. Know that ahead of time and take a deep breathe you have family and friends that can handle the hiccups that arise.
10. Enjoy your day: just remember that at the end of the day the only thing that matters is that you are marrying your soulmate. As long as the bride and groom are having a good time everyone would be just as happy, because they are there to celebrate the union of two people they love.
