One of the best parts of planning your wedding is creating a bridal registry! Picking out items for your future home can be overwhelming but also really fun! It’s like playing house in your favorite stores! Most people start their registry soon after they get engaged so their guests have the option to buy gifts for the engagement party and bridal shower. Don’t freak out about having a complete registry right away, start off small and use the following tips to create a really great registry.

1. The first thing you should do is take a look at what you both have already that you want to keep or is still in good condition. If you already have a great blender or juicer, no need to register for a new one. Of course we all love new things, but think about it from the gift-giver perspective as well. They want to give you something that you’ve picked out that you really want- so don’t . It’s a nice surprise to see it in your new home. Why not make the items on your registry things that you actually need instead of just going scanner gun crazy in the store like Katherine Heigl in 27 Dresses?

2. Once you know what you have at home and what you’re lacking, make a comprehensive list of what you want to register for. Take a look at that list and if you have specific brands or stores that you want (like the super soft sheets from Macy’s Hotel Collection) note that. It will help you narrow down which stores you need to register at.

3. Pick your store(s). Most brides register at 2 or 3 stores. Again, think from the gift giver perspective, it becomes tedious for your friends or family to look at 3 different websites to find the perfect gift for you. Keep it simple if you can. Macy’s, Bed Bath and Beyond, Crate and Barrel, Williams and Sonoma, Target and Bloomingdale’s are good and popular options because of their wide selections and nationwide locations so people can go to their local store if they want. 4. Sometimes couples want a unique registry- there are lots of options for that as well…like registering your honeymoon so your guests can contribute to your vacation. You can also set up a charity registry for people to donate to in your name.

5. Most importantly, remember that the gifts are for both of you. Ideally, you should go to the stores together. Some grooms may not be into the idea, so try going to one store and ease him into it. Crate and Barrel stores host registry specific brunch events which are really fun- check your local store for details. Talk about styles that you both like, what kind of decor you want for your home and split up the final say to make it fair. Maybe he gets to make final decisions on electronics, while you get to choose the bedroom and bathroom items.
