After (and sometimes before) the what and where of a wedding has been decided the most important decision for any bride is THE DRESS (or SARee, LEHENGA, etc)
Designers like Manish Malhotra (India’s Vera Wang) are showing collections where they mix Indian fabrics with Western structures.
Now with all this knowledge comes great responsibility…looking like you stepped off a runway not fashion roadkill. There are two ways to make navigating thru the sequins and chiffon a little easier, pick up your favorite partner in crime and visit a local bridal boutique or grab a bowl of low fat popcorn and watch a classic Bollywood movie.
Making an appointment at a local bridal boutique will allow you to try on as many different types of dresses as possible. Note the way each style fits and most importantly how they make you feel. Once you have a shape that you love you can focus on sari gowns with that shape.
Bollywood has always been a driving force in what is popular in fashion. By watching both classic and period films you can get a more visual idea of where most of today’s looks are coming from. Pay close attention to looks worn by Madhubala and Waheeda Rehman as well as the looks in Umroa Jaan, Devdas and Jodha Akbar. Just like with trying on gowns you can choose which look you identify with the most and then you can build your bridal fashion around it.
When Tarun Tahliani was asked what the number one fashion mistake brides make was he replied, ”…listening to everyone but themselves!” While flipping thru look books and trying on gowns remember that this is for YOUR day. Make sure to stay true to yourself and your own style because the clothes will make you look lovely but your confidence will make you look exquisite.
