Every bride looks at the cost of their wedding and is flabbergasted by the final number to create her perfect day.  And South Asian weddings are not by any means simple nor do they have a small budget.  Part of that cost goes towards the small gifts we give at different ceremonies to friends and family.  Then of course there are the favors at the wedding reception.

Finding that perfect favor that doesn’t just sit at someone’s house or get tossed out is hard to do.  Everybody’s budget is different, but what if you could give something that would help make this world a better place? Sounds cliché, I know, but starting your life with your husband by donating to a great cause is an excellent way to pay it forward.

In planning your Desi wedding, couples want to reflect who they are and share what they love. So choosing a charity that is near to both of you is not as difficult as you may think. Try to find an organization that supports a cause that you have had personal experience with such as the American Cancer Society, Autism Speaks, Pratham, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or one of the many organizations that give back to India and Pakistan (we will be adding a few in the next couple weeks).  If you have a few that you can’t decide between you can create a donation board and let guest’s choose which organization they would like for you to donate to on their behalf.

There are many sites dedicating to donating through a couple’s registry.  Couples can list their favorite charities on their wedding website as well. Over 650,000 couples have donated through WeddingChannel.com since 2004!!

So before you decide to burn a mix cd, buy chapsticks or make snack boxes with chocolate or nuts or mints, think about someone in need that could make your donation last a lifetime.
