Indian Wedding Trends of 2013
Colors:
We are seeing new bright and bold color combinations at desi weddings this year. Couples are opting for multiple colors versus doing 2 bright colors and a neutral. Teals, gold and reds, pinks, golds and Purples, and a continual favorite pinks, oranges and yellows. Brides are opting for adding color into their bridal attire versus wearing traditional colors.
Welcome Parties:
They have been called welcome parties, welcome soiree, or welcome nights. Typically the bride’s guests and groom’s guests don’t get to interact until the reception, but now that Welcome nights have started that is changing. We have seen an increase in Welcome nights where both families get together with their guests and every one gets to mingle in a casual atmosphere. Some welcome nights are in lieu of a sangeet, mendhi and/or garba or they are a combination of them all. Friends and family give speeches there are some dance performances, full dinner, a DJ, and a bar. In short, it’s a mini reception. There have been mixed reviews of Welcome nights, if they are mini receptions, guests often feel that it takes away from the excitement of the reception. If welcome nights are on the simpler side, with some appetizers, background music with a chance for people to really mingle then it still lends itself to the natural progression of the weekend.
Mandaps:
Traditional mandaps have taken a back seat to mandaps created with florals and fabric draping. Mandaps have been seen with domes created out of fabric in the middle with chandeliers hanging from them. We have also seen crystals being incorporated into the mandaps as well as non traditional colors.
Props:
At receptions, we have started to notice more couples are giving items away on the dance floor when the party gets going. Some have seen sunglasses, others have glow sticks to give it a club feel. Couples have given mardi gras beads and hats too.
Photobooths:
Photobooths have still been prevalent at weddings for the past few years. Now we are seeing more props being introduced as well as photo walls versus a physical booth. Couples have been adding props that represent them in the booth.
Seating:
Tables have strayed away from having only one style of table. We have seen floor plans that include rounds mixed with long tables. Floor plans that have included banquet tables made into an X surrounded by rounds have also been seen. Finally we have seen lounge furniture incorporated around the dance floor and or reception areas.
