Soun and I went ring shopping over a year ago in February 2013 and for the past few months I had been asking him if he had gotten a ring yet. He kept saying no because he has a lot going on with moving to NY and finding a new job. I continually harassed him but he was adamant that he couldn’t get a ring right now. I thought it would happen soon because I thought he wanted to be engaged before moving but then one night he said we don’t have to be engaged to live together, so I truly was convinced he hadn’t even started looking for rings.
Soun came for my birthday weekend as planned, and we decided to go look at an apartment in Long Island on Saturday morning. We got back to my apartment around 3:45pm and I opened the door and saw some white stuff on the ground and said “eww what is this?” Then I opened the door more and saw candles, flowers, rose petals on the ground, and John Legend’s “All of Me” was playing and I just froze. I thought to myself “THIS IS THE MOMENT” but I was freaking out and saying “oh my god what is going on” like a broken record. I walked further into my apartment and saw my coffee table decorated with vases and candles, an iPad with slide show of photos of us, and a pretty box in the middle 🙂 I still continued to freak out, clutching my heart and repeating “I am having a heart attack right now” and finally, Soun told me to stop talking. He got down on one knee and asked me if I promised to wear this ring every day forever and I said yes and he opened the box and there was a ring pop! (He has always told me he’s going to get me a ring pop instead of a real ring). I just looked at him and didn’t know what to say. In my head, I thought “maybe the ring is inside the ring pop? Should I bite it to crack it open?” Then I thought, “is this like a promise ring to shut me up because I’ve been so annoying for a long time?” and then after a minute of silence, he pulled out the real ring and proposed!!I kept asking him who decorated my apt because I was in disbelief that he could have set all that up by himself. So then I realized his sister must have had something to do with it and he told me she did because she was in town for a friend’s birthday. I immediately wanted to call EVERYONE but Soun told me to get ready in 30 min (shower, do my hair and make up…impossible!) to go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for a photo shoot. His original plan was to propose outside and the photographer would capture it, but the rain ruined that plan…plan B…so much better!
We rushed to the Met and took pictures and then had an amazing dinner at Colicchio and Sons (everyone should go there and get the Ossau-Iraty Cheese Shortcake with Guava, Chervil Cream & Caramel — it is divine). After dinner, Soun insisted we go home but I wanted to go meet up with his sister and husband to say thank you for decorating the apartment. Little did I know, Soun had one more surprise up his sleeve.
When we got to the bar, EVERYONE was there – my cousins, my friends, Soun’s siblings and cousins too! It was so great to celebrate with everyone!
Even though I’m really good at ruining surprises and bugged Soun ALL the time, I had absolutely NO idea it was going to happen when it did and I have never been so surprised in my life. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect proposal!
