Engagement Proposal Story
Surjeet and I dated for 5 years and had a long distance relationship, I was in SF Bay area while he moved from LA to NYC to Las Vegas. Like every relationship we had our ups and downs but always had this bond that could not be broken or replaced by anyone. Fast forward 5 years later, it was March 26, 2011 … my best friend and I were having a joint birthday bash and Surjeet was in town for the celebration. The morning of the proposal my friend, Michelle, tells me she has not found the perfect birthday dress and wants to go shopping.
I am ready to go when Michelle shows up looking hella cute with her hair done, make up done and a cute outfit. I am surprised to see her wearing make up during the day time and I go in to the bathroom and tell Surjeet “Damnn Michelle is wearing eye shadow”. He responds “You should always wear make up too, you don’t want her to out do you or something… do you”. When we leave to go shopping I am really surprised that Surjeet wanted me to wear more make up and be dressed up just to go shopping.
Michelle and I are shopping it up when she gets a phone call from her mom that her brother is no where to be found and that their relatives need to be picked up from San Jose airport. Mind you, San Francisco is 1 hour away from San Jose but I volunteered to go with her. While driving down to San Jose I start telling Michelle that San Jose airport was actually where Surjeet and I first met, she was super interested in my story, I picked him up from the airport because he was in town for a friends wedding and we planned to go out to dinner, it was kind of a blind date because we had seen only a few pictures of each other online and spoken a handful of times on the phone.
We arrived at the airport and she leads me to baggage claim saying that her relatives don’t have a cell phone and to look for a guy with a turban. I’m thinking ewwah what kind of people don’t have cellphones in 2011. We walk in and I spot this Indian guy taking a video of San Jose airport and I’m like “Michelle look at that fob!” (who turns out to be the photographer/videographer capturing the proposal). An airport official approaches me and hands me a bouquet of flowers and says there is a special message for you, and in the flowers is a picture of Surjeet and I when we first started dating. I am in total shock and slightly embarrassed because passengers at the airport are starting to stare at me.
And next thing I hear his voice on the intercom and at this point I realize what’s going on because the TV monitors read “special announcement for rimi gill”. Surjeet’s voice comes on the intercom and I cant believe he is proposing to me over the intercom! I honestly can’t remember everything that he said but here are a few things that are still in my memory “This airport holds a special place in my heart because this is where we first met” also “last 5 years of my life have been the happiest because they were spent with you” and last “was it worth the wait?!” I couldn’t believe he was proposing to me at the airport and am even more surprised when I see his closest friends coming down the escalator.
Next 3 of my closest friends brought down a rose representing the 3 years we had spent together and the last 2 roses are brought by my sister and brother in law (who flew in from NYC)!!
I had always thought that getting proposed to at dinner would be so cute but this blew my mind. It was at the place where we first met and surrounded with our closest and dearest, it was so meaningful. And to keep the memento going Surjeet had a party bus waiting outside so that we could celebrate our engagement with our friends all the way back up to San Francisco while popping champagne and doing bhangra!
We stopped at twin peaks where there is a fantastic view of SF and Golden Gate bridge for a photoshoot with our friends.
I got a canary diamond, cushion cut, in a halo setting 🙂
