Karuna Chani is an internationally recognized and accomplished make up artist, image and skin care consultant.
Her introduction to the world of beauty and fashion came at an early age, when she discovered women’s fashion magazines. Spending hours and hours combing through the glossy pages, she became fascinated with the transformative powers of make up and clothes.
This passion for the fashion and beauty industries led Karuna to the Parsons School of Design where her dream initially was to follow in the footsteps of Marc Jacobs and the designing duo behind Badgley Mishcka. As a fashion student, she not only designed for the runway but learned how make up and skin care were integral to executing a designers overall artistic vision. And upon this realization, she left her fashion design dreams behind to focus on her newfound passion for the beauty industry.
Karuna moved to Southeast Asia in 2002 and opened her first makeup studio. Her clientele included international professional women and celebrities from Singapore, India, Bali, Thailand and Hong Kong. In addition to opening her first makeup studio she freelanced for luxury beauty lines such as Guerlain and Make Up Forever. The fashion and beauty press quickly took notice and soon Karuna’s work was being featured in magazines such as Vogue India, Marie Claire India, Cosmopolitan Indonesia, Femina and Hello India.
With so much success abroad, Karuna returned to New York City in 2005 to work as a makeup artist for Giorgio Armani Cosmetics, NARS and Chanel. In addition to working with these prestigious brands, Karuna collaborated with jewelry designer Amrita Singh and worked on various projects with renowned photographers; Ian Cuttler, James Weber and Charudutt Chitrak.
Highlights in Karuna’s career have included two “Big Beauty” features for Marie Claire India. One in 2010 with famed photographer Anushka Menon and another for the June 2012 issue. She was also tapped for commentary in a beauty article for the Marie Claire India August 2012 issue. Karuna has also worked with internationally noted photographers Bikramjit Bose and Ashish Chawla. And upcoming, she will also be featured in the HELLO! Magazine India February 2013 issue.
Along with her extensive magazine work, Karuna is the go to makeup artist for famous Bollywood star and musical artist Priyanka Chopra, and executives of Chopard USA . Her charitable involvements and contributions include the Sunflower Children Funds, Indo-American Arts Council, Inc., Children’s Hope India and Reach 2010 which showcased fashion designer Satya Paul’s 2011 collection.”
