Before Santosh and I were engaged, we had already started discussing our wedding and what both our families wanted. His family made it easy, when it came to the guest list. They had a guest list of 200 people and boy did that make my day. Santosh and I have a limited guest list of about 50 people that we are inviting between us (25 each). NOW, my parents initially threw out the number 900. Yes, you read that right 9-0-0. As a grown woman, I was not above throwing a tantrum right there (once I got over the shock). Looking back, I shouldn’t have been surprised, the first wedding in my family had a guest list of 1200 and that was 16 years ago. Two of my cousins were married this year, one had a guest list of 1200 the other had around 600. My family does it large and why did I think that I could be different? Silly me.
Brides to be and ladies that will be married one day: It is NEVER to early to throw out your wedding ideas and numbers to your parents. It can help prepare all of you for when it actually becomes a reality. I had always dreamed of a small wedding ceremony and having all the other events with a larger guest list. My parents didn’t have the same dream. It took us several weeks to go through the guest lists of both of my cousins (ask your family for guests lists of their weddings and table seating, some of your work is already done) and agree to a number that worked for both of us. My parent’s number is now 400ish with a long B list. For those of you wondering, if I know all those people- yes I do. It also makes me feel bad that I know people on the B list that my parents are hoping to invite.
Once you have a good idea what your number is going to be then you can start looking at venues. Looking for a venue for 600ish people in Southern Massachusetts and Rhode Island for my multiple day Hindu wedding is not easy, but that’s another post.
