Choosing your clothes for your engagement session
What to wear for your engagement photos:
Once you have narrowed down the slew of location options, we can discuss what to wear. Think about your locations to take your engagement photos, what are the prominent colors there? Make sure the colors you choose to wear do not blend into the location. You want to make sure that you and your fiance both stand out.
If you are taking engagement photos on the beach, leave your sky high heels at home. If you engagement photography shoot is in the spring, leave your sweaters at home. Choose clothes that make some sense of your location.
Whether you are wearing formal clothing, casual clothing, or South Asian clothes you want to look like yourselves. Ultimately, your shoot should have pictures that are a polished version of both of you.
Here is where you might need to spend some money. Polish your nails or get a manicure and pedicure, your hands and ring will be in photographs. Get your hair done and makeup done. If you can do it well on your own then great, but if not it’s worth it to pay to have these done. I chose to get my hair blown out, but did my makeup on my own. Figure out what works for you. Go a little heavier with your makeup, in the photos your makeup will be toned down. Don’t forget to have your gloss or lip color on hand for touchups.
Show yourself!
- You and your fiance(e) are the primary focus, so you want to wear something that reflects who you are and what you love.
- If he has a trademark hat, have him wear it.
- If you are always wearing jaw dropping jewelry, wear them.
- If you both love traveling, maybe visit the maparium as part of your shoot.
Choose clothes that compliment each other.
- If you’re in a knock out dress with accessories to match, having him wear jeans probably isn’t a good idea.
- If you are an upscale fashionista, help your Mr. pull together an outfit that matches your level of dressiness.
- Outfit changes are must – so maybe have one outfit that’s pretty casual and fun, and one that’s a touch more dressy and nice. Maybe you want to wear a South Asian outfit too, but remember you will have many at your wedding.
- Choose structure clothes that are well tailored and fit you well. Check to see if your clothes give you a flattering silhouette
Comfort is key.
- Leave those “I have to lay down to button these jeans” at home and opt for something that you feel free to move around in.
- Bring comfy shoes to wear in between shots if you are going to be in heels.
- Avoid too tight-fitting clothes that might accentuate curves you’re not fond of.
- Think about the time of year and location – ie, if it’s freezing outside – shorts and a tank top might not be ideal.
Make a statement with color.
- I love rich colors, and dark colors are always slimming.
- Avoid words or busy patterns on your clothes.
- You do not want to wear matching colors, but rather choose colors that compliment each other.
- You can both wear colors in the same color family.
- Something with a little pop always photographs well.
- Avoid colors that clash with each other.
Splurge for the killer photo.
- I’m sure you don’t need an excuse to buy a new dress J
- Maybe you want to bring some props that reflect you as a couple.
- And, if you’re all dolled up… it’s a perfect excuse for a post-session date night.
PDAs.
- Don’t be shy, we all know you are in LOVE! So show it: smile and laugh and flirt.
- Show yourself as a couple. Totally in love and totally excited for the big day.
